After organizing training for Elk Grove small-business owners, Students in Free Enterprise won a regional award for their work.
Earlier this spring, Elk Grove Patch collaborated with a student group at Cosumnes River College to produce a series of workshops for local small-business owners. We were happy to hear this week that the CRC Students in Free Enterprise club has won a regional award for their work in the Elk Grove community, and will be heading off to the SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, MO next week. Besides the training—which helped Elk Grove entrepreneurs learn about accounting, marketing, social media and more—students in the club have organized an entrepreneurship forum for high schoolers and raised funds for Elk Grove Food Bank Services. Here's a little more about their work, from a CRC press release: Cosumnes River College’s Students In …

Freebirds opening is part of a mini-restaurant boom along Elk Grove artery.
Tuesday's launch of Freebirds World Burrito on Elk Grove Blvd is just one in a handful of recent high-profile restaurant openings in town. As one KCRA reporter pointed out, at least three other restaurants have opened on Laguna Blvd within the last four months, including Leatherby's Creamery, Smashburger and Dickey's Barbecue Pit. The new eateries are all part of chains (some small, some large) offering different takes on gourmet American food. And they've all used social media marketing to cultivate a loyal fan base. Now that all the buzz is beginning to die down, where are you most excited about eating? Vote in our poll and feel free to share your comments below.

Dozens camp out in front of new Freebirds restaurant
Is it Black Friday again already? Nope—those hardy teens and young adults pitching tents in the Laguna Gateway shopping center aren't lusting after a big-screen TV. They're Freebirds World Burrito fans anxious to take advantage of the restaurant's opening day special: free burritos for a year for the first 25 people in line at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The first campers started showing up Saturday afternoon—a record lead time in the history of the restaurant, which offers the same deal each time it opens a new location. "They're pretty much paying us to stay out here," said Dan Seip, #17 on the list. Seip was referring to the Freebirds badge he's hoping to get Tuesday, entitling him to one burrito a week for the next 52 weeks. At about $6.50 for…
Where do you go to hear some tunes, and what other choices would you like to have?
We've heard it said more than a few times: Elk Grove needs more nightlife. We agree. But that's not to say there's nowhere to get your groove on in town. On a typical Friday night, the boots are scootin' at The Wrangler, and old-school R&B singers are crooning away at Pins N Strikes. You can hear homespun guitar and vocals at the Brick House, metal at Elk Grove Sports Bar and mariachis at El Potro Taqueria. Where's your favorite place to hear live music in the Grove? Click on the business's name to leave a review, and vote in the poll below. Here are the nominees: The Brick House Restaurant and Lounge El Potro Taqueria Elk Grove Sports Bar & Grill Pins N Strikes The Wrangler For the bonus question, we want to know what you'd add to Elk …

Located on Elk Grove Blvd near Big Horn Blvd, The Falls of Elk Grove will provide rental space for meetings and parties.
Elk Grovians looking for a place to hold a wedding or family reunion will likely soon have one more option to choose from, after the City Council Wednesday approved plans for a new event center on Elk Grove Blvd. Utah company The Falls says it's had success in the Midwest and Southwest offering low-cost rental space for meetings and parties, and wants to bring the same concept to Elk Grove. The Falls of Elk Grove will occupy two 13,000-plus-square-foot buildings on Elk Grove Blvd between Big Horn Blvd and Laguna Springs Drive, according to documents filed with the city—right next to the site of the city's planned civic center. It will include a main hall that can hold close to 300 people, smaller game and meeting rooms and a theater. The …

Local woman wants to open one, seeks input.
A recent posting on chat room Elk Grove Online caught our eye: A local woman was interested in opening a "nice, clean" tattoo shop in Elk Grove, but wanted to get feedback from Elk Grovians before going through the permitting process. Why the cold feet? Though everyone and their mama seems to have a tatt these days, some still associate them with gangs and crime. City Council members shot down an effort to open a tattoo and piercing parlor in Old Town in 2009. Readers, help budding ink entrepreneur egwinelady out by sharing your opinions on this topic. Would you support a tattoo shop opening in Elk Grove? And if so, where should it be located? Vote in the poll, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.
Is one of your favorites among the nominees? Voting ends Friday.
Elk Grove Patch isn't the only media outlet running Readers' Choice polls. While our polls focus on Elk Grove, KCRA's A-List highlights viewers' favorite businesses from around the Sacramento region in over 100 categories. Many popular Elk Grove spots are among this year's nominees, from Scarlett Salon & Spa, competing for best hair salon, to The Moppet Shoppe (best children's clothing) and Happy Garden (best Chinese food). Voting ends Friday at 11:59 p.m. Is your business competing? Let us know. Tell us who you voted for in the comments.
