Big Wheels, Big Fun at Elk Grove Library

Library card drive drew in some big, cool wheels.

Take a look at some of the fun that took place Saturday at the Frankling Library in Elk Grove.

The library brought in the big wheels -- two dozen vehicles of all sizes and shapes --  to offer a bit of fun for people singing up for library cards as part of  Library Card Sign-up Month.

Last year's event drew more than 1,700 people to the Library's spacious 60,000-square-foot parking lot for a day of festivities, according to the library. While library-goers enjoyed some cool vehicles, including the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, they also had the opportunity to take in storytimes, prize drawings, food and entertainment.

On Saturday, people took in the740B Articulated Hauler; SWAT vehicles from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and the Elk Grove Police Department; a bucket truck from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District; an OMG Burger TruckMr. Sancho's Ice Cream Truck; a Brinks armored car; Oscar Mayer Wienermobile; a drag racer from the Sacramento Raceway; a delivery truck and bookmobile from the Sacramento Public Library; and the Radio Flyer Car, a full-sized car shaped just like a kid's little red wagon.

The American Library Association has held Library Card Sign-up Month every September since 1988 as "a time to remind parents and children that a library card is the most important school supply of all."
