Elk Grove Celebrates Veterans Day (Photos)

Thousands of people gathered Sunday morning to watch the 12th-annual Elk Grove Veterans Day Parade.

Elk Grove residents of all ages gathered Sunday to celebrate Veterans Day: from World War II veterans to kids a long way from being old enough to enlist.

"Say thank you to the veterans," Elk Grove City Council Member Sophia Scherman urged attendees. "They deserve our thank yous every day of our lives."

Elk Grove Mayor Jim Cooper, whose father served in the Air Force for 21 years, said "this country would not be great without" veterans.

The parade, which included multiple marching bands, Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and other organizations, was grand marshaled by Maj. Gen. David S. Baldwin, Adjutant General of the California National Guard.

"You need to keep in mind also the families of the veterans," Baldwin told a crowd before the parade began. "They sacrifice so much that enables us to go overseas to do our job."
