Elk Grove Residents Joke About New Pope & Celebrate on Twitter

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is now Pope Francis. Read local reactions to the announcement.

For many Elk Grove and area residents, Wednesday's selection of a new pope was an occasion to crack some jokes online. For others, it was a cause for celebration.

Read some of those posts and other nearby Tweets about the selection of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, the son of an Italian railway worker. He is the first Jesuit and first South American pontiff, according to news reports.

He has taken the name Francis, another first.

Thanks for the suggestion. The City is currently studying a new interchange off 99 and Whitelock,…Read More and the project is in our General Plan. We’re also updating the Elk Grove Blvd. onramp—currently one of the most outdated on 99 in the region. Work will begin this summer.
