A flag display and a service at East Lawn Memorial Park were two of the ways Elk Grovians commemorated the fallen Monday.

Monday morning, American flags filled the lawn of the Cosumnes Community Services Distict building on Elk Grove Blvd.

The annual Memorial Day display is organized by Elk Grove City Council member Sophia Scherman and her husband, Lee, in honor of Scherman's uncle, a World War II medic killed in the battle of Iwo Jima.

"We add one flag a year, so this year we have 2011," Lee Scherman said.

Families stopped by throughout the morning to pick up the flags, which were free to the public.

Veterans' organizations also held a Memorial Day service in East Lawn Memorial Park.
