Poll Results: The Worst Thing About Elk Grove

Tops on the list: a lack of employment opportunities

This week, we encouraged you all to vent about what most bugs you about Elk Grove, and vent you did!

Of the overwhelming number of responses we received, too few jobs and falling property values were neck and neck for most of the week, with the former finally winning out, 28 percent to 22 percent.

Thirteen percent of you raised concerns about crime, while 10 percent were bummed out about the lack of nightlife and eight percent thought the city had too many chain stores and restaurants.

High business taxes and fees came in last with six percent, which surprised us after the number of complaints we've heard from local business owners on this issue.

The write-in votes came fast and furious on this one, with readers naming everything from "traffic on Elk Grove Blvd" to "an overzealous police department" as things that really chapped their hides.

"The drinking water is terrible," one reader wrote. "We're a jumble of strip malls and homes," commented another.

A third had what seemed like a very specific gripe: "The city of Elk Grove takes 90 days to pay contractors for work."

But what struck us most were the comments one reader emailed in after taking the poll:

"Essentially, the worst part about EG is all of the above. If more people are employed locally, they will be able to stay in their homes. If people have a place to stay, crime should go down...Fix one thing on that list—go hard at one item and only one item—and the rest will fall in place."

What do you think, readers?
