Hometown boys make good. Two local high school baseball stars, Kyle Castro of Pleasant Grove High School and of Elk Grove High School, were drafted into the Major League yesterday. Castro will pitch for the Texas Rangers while Davis—an Elk Grove Patch Athlete of the Week last month—will play third base for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rangers also took Sacramento City College pitcher Kyle DeVore, a Pleasant Grove High School alum.

City council to discuss redistricting and next year's budget tonight. The budget is balanced for the moment, but Elk Grove will likely face a deficit in the near future, City Manager Laura Gill told the council at its last meeting. Public safety cuts in Sacramento. Facing a $39 million deficit, the Sacramento City Council voted last night to lay off 80 police officers and scale back fire service. "The Police Department I know will no longer exist," Councilman Darrell Fong was quoted as saying in The Sacramento Bee.
