Thousands Expected to Line Elk Grove Streets Sunday

Rain or shine, annual Veterans Day parade to include ceremony, flyover, bikes and hot dogs.

With more than 300 participants, more than 3,000 spectators expected and 1,200 hot dogs, this year's Elk Grove Veterans Day parade will be hard to ignore. Started by a group of volunteers 12 years ago, it's since grown into one of the largest celebrations in the region.

This year is no exception, with the opening ceremonies slated to start at 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by the parade and barbecue. Elk Grove councilwoman Sophia Scherman, one of the original volunteers, said 432 names of veterans will be read during the ceremony, a list that grows every year.

Also, the day's events will not be rescheduled or cancelled due to inclement weather. The barbecue following at Elk Grove Park is free, as are the thousands of American flags that are passed out prior to the parade, Scherman said.
