Thousands Expected to Line Elk Grove Streets Sunday

Rain or shine, annual Veterans Day parade to include ceremony, flyover, bikes and hot dogs.

With more than 300 participants, more than 3,000 spectators expected and 1,200 hot dogs, this year's Elk Grove Veterans Day parade will be hard to ignore. Started by a group of volunteers 12 years ago, it's since grown into one of the largest celebrations in the region.

This year is no exception, with the opening ceremonies slated to start at 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by the parade and barbecue. Elk Grove councilwoman Sophia Scherman, one of the original volunteers, said 432 names of veterans will be read during the ceremony, a list that grows every year.

Also, the day's events will not be rescheduled or cancelled due to inclement weather. The barbecue following at Elk Grove Park is free, as are the thousands of American flags that are passed out prior to the parade, Scherman said.

Road closures will start at 9:30 a.m. and last through 1 p.m., according to a news release from the Elk Grove Police Department.

The parade, which starts at the Cosumnes Community Services District building, will require the following closures, according to the EGPD:

  • "Elk Grove Boulevard, in both directions, will be closed from Williamson Drive to Elk Grove-Florin Road.

  • All retail center driveways will also be closed.

  • Elk Grove-Florin Road between Elk Grove Boulevard and the northeast entrance to Elk Grove Park will be closed to all traffic in both directions.

  • Eastbound traffic on Elk Grove Boulevard, approaching Williamson Drive, will be diverted onto northbound Williamson Drive, or back onto westbound Elk Grove Boulevard. The detour will take drivers to Elk Grove-Florin Drive.

  • Traffic southbound on Elk Grove-Florin Road, approaching Elk Grove Boulevard, will be diverted onto eastbound Elk Grove Boulevard. Traffic westbound on Elk Grove Boulevard, approaching Elk Grove-Florin Road, will be diverted onto northbound Elk Grove-Florin Road.

  • All streets and retail center driveways on Elk Grove-Florin Road, between the northeast Elk Grove Park entrance, and Elk Grove Boulevard, will be closed with cones.

  • All traffic on eastbound Valley Oak Lane, approaching Elk Grove-Florin Road, will be diverted back onto westbound Valley Oak Lane.

  • All northbound traffic on Elk Grove-Florin Road, approaching the northeast Elk Grove Park entrance, will be diverted back onto southbound Elk Grove-Florin Road."
