Weekend Planner: Taste of the Islands, Big Band Blues

Here's what's happening in and around Elk Grove this weekend.

Elk Grove residents love a good time—for proof, check out the number of late-summer shindigs on our event calendar.  We've got the 411 on a few weekend highlights below. Join your friends over food and drink or at an outdoor concert, and party 'til the cows come home. Just don't forget the designated driver; Elk Grove PD is watching.

Grass skirt optional. Hawaiian Tropical Luau is the theme for the Franklin Football Boosters 4th Annual Wildcat Football Dinner/Dance fundraiser Friday at the 's Valley Oak Ballroom, complete with raffles, a live auction and dance performance by Makamae Melia O' Polynesia.  Festivities go from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Showtime.  If the sounds of harmonicas and horns float your boat, don't miss the Delta Wires at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday at McConnell Estates Winery.  Gates open at 5:30 p.m., so arrive a bit early to claim a great lawn spot and relax over a glass of wine before the music starts.

License and registration, please.  Going out for some socializing over drinks?  Be sure to cab it or find a teetotaler pal to man the wheel; the Elk Grove Police Department is conducting a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint this Saturday from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m.
