Dog Thrown Into 25-Foot Storm Drain With Bicycle Lock Wrapped Around Legs

A witness said the dog was forced into the storm drain in South Sacramento and abandoned.

Officials on Sunday rescued a dog who was reportedly thrown into a 25-foot-deep storm drain with a bicycle lock wrapped around her legs.

Responders from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Animal Care were able to free the dog from the drain, near Power Inn and Calvine roads in south Sacramento, around 5:40 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters used ventilation equipment and air-monitoring tools to give the dog better air, and a firefighter wearing a breathing mask lowered himself 15 feet to the bottom, then crawled to the dog, according to a press release.

A bicycle lock was wrapped around the dog's hind legs, but responders were able to pull him from the drain uninjured, the press release states.

"We all have dogs and we all love dogs," the press release quoted Fire Battalion Chief Maurice Johnson as saying. "We are just glad to be able to give this [girl] a second chance."

A witness at the scene told officials that "the dog was forced down the storm drain," according to the press release.

The Sacramento County Animal Shelter said on Facebook Sunday night that the "sweet girl is going to be just fine!"

Residents are already asking when she'll be available for adoption.
