Are You Losing Your Amazon Affiliate Status? Weigh in Here

Are you one of the 10,000 Amazon affiliates who will be cut loose as a result of a new tax law?

California legislators want Amazon to pony up sales taxes for its sales in the state, and the online retail giant isn't happy.

The Seattle-based company sent an email to about 10,000 California "affiliates" Wednesday, saying it would close the program in this state as a response to Gov. Jerry Brown signing the online sales tax bill into law.

The affiliates have websites linking to Amazon, and when a reader clicks through their link and purchases something, they receive between 4 and 15 percent of the sales.

"We oppose this bill because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive," Amazon said in its email, according to TechCrunch. "It is supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside California, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors."
