Business News: Sinful Treats Bakery Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Celebration April 10

What began as an online baking business in 2009 is now transorming into a full commercial kitchen and storefront bakery for Mariel Black and her Sinful Treats Bakery.

Black will open her bakery at 5650 Whitelock Parkway and to commemorate the occasion the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting from 10 a.m. till 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 10.

“Old-fashioned, fresh baked treats is what Sinful Treats is all about,” Black wrote on her website. “It brings me the greatest pleasure when people tell me that my treats remind them of their grandma’s recipes.”

Chamber officials note the bakery will add a new monthly tasting party event to its repertoire, beginning Friday, April 26. The party will enable customers to sample baked goods and mingle at the party, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., according to a Chamber press release. The parties will be held on the last Friday of each month.

Black began the business in 2009 after having run a daycare business for several years, according to Chamber officials:

Once the recession took a toll on her customer base, she turned her attention to something that she had always done for fun – baking. But hers weren’t the typical bakery treats. It was Food of the Gods, a delectable butter pastry with dates and walnuts. The decadent dessert garnered a following in the restaurant and coffee houses where they were being sold and soon, Black found herself looking to expand her line of tempting treats. Her offerings have since grown to include Americanized takes on traditional Filipino recipes, and a host of other gourmet treats, such as white chocolate coconut macaroons, snickerdoodles, specialty desserts, breakfast pastries, pies and more. Her baked goods also can be shipped locally and nationwide.

Black’s business expanded exponentially over the years, including into the catering business in 2011, and in late 2012, she opened her commercial kitchen space and storefront at 5650 Whitelock Parkway, Suite 110 in Elk Grove. There, customers can find a daily selection of treats for sale, as well as rent the dining space for business meetings, parties and events. The business also includes catering, wholesale baking and partners with local schools on fundraising opportunities.

In early March, Black and her staff baked about 800 cookies, bars and other treats that were sent to injured U.S. soldiers recovering at a military hospital in Germany. Black works with Soldiers’ Angels on the campaign and customers donated money towards the effort, as well as wrote letters to accompany the sweet treats. It was the second time the bakery has partnered with Soldiers’ Angels on such an effort.
