POLL: Does Elk Grove Need a Tattoo Shop?

Local woman wants to open one, seeks input.

A recent posting on chat room Elk Grove Online caught our eye: A local woman was interested in opening a "nice, clean" tattoo shop in Elk Grove, but wanted to get feedback from Elk Grovians before going through the permitting process.

Why the cold feet? Though everyone and their mama seems to have a tatt these days, some still associate them with gangs and crime. City Council members shot down an effort to open a tattoo and piercing parlor in Old Town in 2009.

Readers, help budding ink entrepreneur egwinelady out by sharing your opinions on this topic. Would you support a tattoo shop opening in Elk Grove? And if so, where should it be located? Vote in the poll, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

I'd be curious to know what people's specific objections are to a tattoo shop.
Bwood May 10, 2012 at 04:13 AM
Mark, I'm not going there because you sound like you're waiting to pounce, but if you use a little imagination you should be able to ascertain the obvious.

Seems to me that if these types of services were more acceptable, they would be offered in salons and spas. I am not in favor of having a tatoo shop in Elk Grove, unless the same shop has a removal service as well.

In a way, they are. Permanent makeup is tattooing.

Needs to be right next to the new Walmart for best market capture.

There is no reason that a tattoo parlor couldn't be opened or shouldn't be opened in elk grove. Tattooing is a permant artform hoing back thousands of years. Mummies found in the Himalayas that are over 5000 yrs old have tattoos. People need to stop being so judgemental...

Bwood ... am I ready to pounce? Not necessarily. I just think it's a worthy discussion to have ... what type of businesses are desirable versus undesirable. When I was on a local community advisory council, people objected to having a church built near their neighborhood because of traffic concerns. Here we have people objecting to a tattoo parlor I'm assuming because of perceived stereotypes about who would be there. Look around you, there are a whole hell of a lot of people getting tattoos these days. It aint just the riff-raff.

I think it would be great and should locate next to Hooters on Elk Grove Florin near the high school.

As the owner of Image Tattoo Company-Galt I went the extra step and spoke with planning about opening a Demographic Studio (tattoo parlor) in Elk Grove, specifically on the corner of Grant Line Rd. and HWY 99 Needless to say the politics behind tattoo's is more personal then factual. I was given a few options with a pricey tag to go with it, was it because of the type of business? I hope it wasn't because of my appearance which by the way I wear a suit n tie. I'm not an artist but a public servant for over 25 years. I, so happen to have a passion for art work, whether on human canvas or paper. I owned several other studios down South, I recall being interviewed by Fox TV, the reporter asked me a question, she said "tattoo is just a passing fad" my reply to her came as a question, I asked her if she had any relatives that fought in WW1? she replied, "yes my 87 year uncle George" I asked does uncle George have any tattoos? she replied "well yes, an anchor" my response to her was "then you tell me when is the fad going to end"? I respect your rights of self expression, please respect those around you, whether you like tatto's or not. Info@imagetattoocompany.com

If a tattooist wishes to open up a shop in Elk Grove, and is willing to take the business risks associated with starting a new business, why would anyone wish to stop that?

Elk Grove is an impossible city to work with and do business in....ask the indoor Soccer World folks........ they pick and choose what they want and unless you are a crafter inOld EG or a franchise with corporate backing. you arent wanted here....
Sarah Johnson December 20, 2012 at 05:27 PM
Jim, As far as I know, Soccer World is doing fine because we all worked together to solve the issues that existed. If there are still problems, I will appreciate knowing about them.
Rico December 20, 2012 at 05:42 PM
I'll let the owners of Soccer World speak for themselves.....they did plenty of that when they almost closed several times during their first few months after having to fight for the right to exist....

Tell me about it.....all I wanted was a nice cosmetic item and had to drive all the way to Sacto to make the purchase. While I was there I did the rest of my shopping, some of what was most likely available here in EG. Maybe what we need are more women on the planning and city council...enough of those discount stores! I hear talk about the MLS, Aquatics Center & those Wayfinding Signs.....for what may I ask? The Dollar Store & Big Lots? Why would people stay here and spend their dollars when you could drive 15-20 miles and have everything at your disposal. We spend thousands of dollars on that Civic Center, the SOI, Railway property, etc. and can't even have as much as a nice steak house. Out of touch with reality......... JM 2 cents! OH yea and I forgot about the $4800.just spent for wayfinding signs for the auto mall....depressing. Time for the coffee and meds.
