Some Elk Grove pet owners learned a thing or two about doggy dental care this weekend at a local pet store.
The PetSmart on Laguna Boulevard offered free teeth exams for dogs and cats on Saturday and Sunday.
Veterinary staff with Banfield Pet Hospital, the in-store clinic of PetSmart, acknowledged that it's rare to find people who brush their pet's teeth every day, as they recommend (they suggest brushing your pet's teeth with specially formulated dog or cat toothpaste, and giving them dental chews between brushings).
"Some type of dental care is better than no dental care at all," Veterinary Assistant Mandy Thompson said. "Could you imagine never going to the dentist for your entire life?"
Visits from willing pets Sunday were sparse, but Banfield staffers and a representative from dental chew company Greenies spent time talking to pet owners about preventative care and handing out fliers showing healthy and unhealthy teeth.
"We're giving people a reference," Thompson said. "This is what's healthy."
