How to Pick Running Shoes: From Casual Jogging to the Running of the Elk

One of the co-owners of the Running Zone, an Elk Grove athletic-shoe store, explains how their shoe selection process works.

Last year, 5K and half-marathon.

Many runners preparing for this year's event–scheduled for April 7–will likely stop by the Running Zone, an athletic shoe store on Elk Grove Boulevard near the Automall.

Mimi Veiga, one of the shop's co-owners since 2008, said it's beneficial for runners to have a professional assist them with picking out a pair of shoes.

"A lot of people don't know if they're flat-footed or high-arched… and that's what we're trained to do," Veiga said.

She said the correct shoes–which can help support the way a runner's feet move and keep them level–can prevent injury.

Veiga said the correct shoes are helpful even if a runner is just starting out.

"A running shoe should support your foot whether you're running a mile, a 5K or a half-marathon," she said.

And don't forget about socks. Veiga said cotton socks can hold in moisture and creature blisters.

Why not down to Grantline and then head back north along the freeway? Plus Kammerer will eventuallyRead More be widened all the way to I-5 and commuters can use that too. Take Grantline to Kammerer to Bruceville.
