Laguna Save Mart Closes Permanently, Ahead of Schedule

The Elk Grove grocery store closed its doors this week.

The on Laguna Boulevard is now permanently closed, five days earlier than was originally planned.

The grocery store at 7707 Laguna Blvd. closed its doors for the last time at 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to a sign posted on its door.

Elk Grove resident Susan Wilson and her husband tried to visit the store Thursday, but turned away when they saw the notice.

"I think it's really sad," Wilson said. "We used it a lot. ... It was a lot more reasonable than some of the other stores around here."

The pair said they would probably shop at WinCo now.

The closure was earlier than expected; .

"Unfortunately, the failing economy and the competition from other retailers have kept this store from performing at the level required to sustain it," Vice President of Save Mart Operations Ed Popke said in a written statement on May 29.
