Walmart contacted us yesterday to assure us that its existing Elk Grove Blvd store will remain open after the company launches a new location at the intersection of Bruceville Road and Whitelock Pkwy.
As we , construction workers for the megaretailer are already leveling ground at the proposed site of the new 148,200-square-foot store, though the city has yet to issue a building permit.
"The existing store is very popular and there is a need for a second Walmart store to serve Elk Grove’s growing population," Walmart spokesperson Delia Garcia said in an email.
Reactions to the new store have been mixed, with some nearby residents eager to shop there while others say that even conditions laid down by the city—limited operating hours, a ban on overnight parking—won't do enough to blunt the impact on their neighborhood.
Then there are those who simply don't trust promises Walmart makes, a camp that appears to include Elk Grove Mayor Jim Cooper.
Readers, what's your reaction to the progress on the new store? Vote below.
They need a store on Sheldon.... where most of their customers come from. Putting one in the middle of a quiet neighborhood is the WRONG LOCATION! It is blatantly clear they are trying to entice the seniors who live in that area.... while destroying the surrounding neighborhood. Please let this area stay quiet and idyllic... we don't need a Walmart here. A Target or a Costco would be MUCH more appreciated!!!!!
