“We are proud to support Women’s Empowerment and Senior Gleaners to help achieve our shared goal to help communities throughout California live better,” said Kim Sentovich, senior vice president for Walmart. “Walmart strongly believes in giving back locally and we look forward to watching these great organizations continue their work and find new ways to positively impact lives.”

The following nonprofits received a State Giving grant to fund vital local programs that have proven to help those in the Sacramento area live better lives:

Senior Gleaners, Inc. received a $25,000 grant to support its Healthy Food Initiative which aims to acquire and disseminate food and non-food items through its network of partner agencies and food banks.

“The gracious donation we’ve received from the Walmart Foundation will allow us to distribute more than 131,000 pounds of food to low-income families,” said Gary McDonald, president and CEO of Senior Gleaners. “This translates into a value of nearly $220,000 that will give our clients the opportunity to spend that money on other essential items like utilities, rent and medication.”

Women’s Empowerment was awarded a $29,800 grant to further their efforts to educate and empower homeless women with the skills and confidence needed to get a job, create a healthy lifestyle and regain a home for themselves and their children.

“We are grateful to the Walmart Foundation for recognizing the significant barriers women face when they are homeless,” said Lisa Culp, executive director of Women’s Empowerment “This grant will help us provide job readiness training to 250 women in the Sacramento area in 2014 so they can break the cycle of homelessness for themselves and their children.”

The Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better, awarding grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S.

Last year in California, the Walmart Foundation and stores throughout the state awarded more than $26 million in cash and in-kind contributions to community groups that are positioned to address the needs of California communities and make a significant social impact within Walmart’s core areas of giving: Hunger Relief & Healthy Eating, Sustainability, Career Opportunity and Women’s Economic Empowerment.

Earlier this year, Walmart’s California State Giving Program granted $225,000 to four Sacramento Valley nonprofits: Roberts Family Development Center, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, Wind Youth Services and City Year Sacramento. The amount granted to nonprofits in communities throughout the state during the first half of the year totaled $1.4 million.
