Happy Juneteenth!

Father's Day isn't the only holiday this weekend.

The Juneteenth holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas and broke the news that the Civil War had ended and slaves were free.

Juneteenth celebrations draw huge crowds in Texas and around the country, and for the last 10 years, Sacramento-area residents as well have turned out to mark the holiday with a festival in Sacramento's William Land Park. This year's fest took place on Friday and Saturday and included a parade, healthy cooking demonstrations, some talented bands and MCs, and mouthwatering Cajun and soul food cuisine.

The organization, which hosted a table at the festival, sponsors a mentoring program for African-American girls at Monterey Trail High School, along with a yearly science fair and a summer reading and math academy for students who need extra attention.
