Inside the Homes and Lives of Sikh Men Shot in Elk Grove

The public knows Gurmej Atwal, 78, and Surinder Singh, 65, as victims of a possible hate crime. Their families describe them as grandfathers, avid walkers and family men.

Two elderly men were shot on East Stockton Blvd. March 4 in what some believe may have been a hate crime. Recently, the families of Gurmej Atwal and the late Surinder Singh invited Elk Grove Patch into their homes, and we learned a little bit more about the victims of this tragic crime.

Kamaljit Atwal, whose father barely survived the shooting, hopes media coverage of the case will prompt a witness to come forward with information—and claim a reward that now stands at more than $42,000.

“The criminals, they have only two or four eyes,” he says. “But the world is watching. Here in this community there are tens of thousands of eyes. Someone has to have seen something.”
