Patch Picks: Local Do-Gooders

These five non-profit organizations are making a difference in Elk Grove.

At Elk Grove Patch, we're big supporters of volunteering in your local community. In the coming weeks, we'll bring you more information about how you can best contribute your time, expertise or money to one of Elk Grove's non-profit organizations. For now, here are five local groups that are impacting the area in positive ways.

1. Project R.I.D.E.  Children with disabilities improve their mental and physical well-being riding specially trained horses, thanks to this one-of-a-kind organization.  Founded in 1979 and nearly 450 riders strong, it provides a unique therapeutic and social outlet for special-needs kids and peace of mind for their parents and caretakers.

2. Elk Grove Food Bank Services.   This charity got its start back in 1974 and has worked diligently ever since to abolish hunger in our area.  With annual fundraisers such as the upcoming Empty Bowls Luncheon and Harvest of Hope, EGFBS now has eight community projects to assist the hungry.  Volunteers work "to provide essential resources to overcome the many faces of hunger and human need"—a mission more important now than ever.

3. Teen Center USA.  If you have a teenager in need of direction and discipline, this nonprofit can help.  Created for "at-risk youth," the center's curriculum focuses on teaching teens leadership and other life skills to make the transition from adolescence to adulthood smoother.

4.  Senior Center of Elk Grove.  Mission statement: "To enhance the lives of people age 50 and over by providing a place for socialization, information, education, recreation and other senior services."  With many programs and activities for Baby Boomers on up, it's easy to see why so many people want to join this friendly group.

5. Rotary Club of Elk Grove.  Coming up on its 49th anniversary this April, this club meets each Wednesday at Vince's Italian Restaurant to discuss bettering our world both locally and globally in the areas of education, environment, poverty and more.  Their "Service Above Self" credo is apparent in all they do.
