Tule Elk Sanctuary Among 70 State Parks Set to Close

The many losers in the state's budget drama include Elk Grove's namesake species.

The California State Parks Department Friday released a list of 70 parks it plans to close due to budget cuts.

As a native Californian, I have fond memories of many of these parks. At Sonoma's Jack London State Historic Park, I roamed the burnt-out ruins of the talented writer's house, thinking of the novels I'd pen. The mineral spires of Mono Lake Tufa State National Reserve startled me when I first glimpsed them on a camping trip with a friend—eerily beautiful, they rise from the lake like something from another planet.

Even the tule elk, the species for which Elk Grove was likely named, will now be off-limits to visitors in their state-run sanctuary off Highway 5 near Bakersfield.
