Week in Review, Dec. 26: Homeless in High School, Masters of Metal, More

A Look at the Week Ending Dec. 26

While Elk Grove Patch hasn't been live for even a week, so much has happened since we launched on Tuesday that we wanted to give you a recap of news you might have missed.

- We debut our Athlete of the Week feature with the Marissa Wimbley. The 5'5" junior at Pleasant Grove says that basketball is her passion. Find out why we picked her to be our first Athlete of the Week.

- One doesn't think of Elk Grove as a town with a large homeless population. But the Elk Grove Unified office tasked with helping homeless students counted 400 clients last year. Elk Grove Patch profiled one one of the success stories.

- Steven Detrick came to Elk Grove to water ski more than 25 years ago, now he needs to help unite a fractious City Council.

- More than two dozen firefighters put out a blaze on Mannington St. last week.

- Elk Grove Food Bank Services provides for the needy 365 days a year. That's 2.5 million pounds of food.

- It could be that better investigations are leading to more arrests, or it could be more people are starting fires. Either way, the Cosumnes Fire Department's Marshal says the majority of the suspects in Elk Grove's intentional blazes are minors.

- Paul Lindsay of Elk Grove First argues that the city's various boards and commission be filled with people representing all of Elk Grove's districts, from the suburban to the rural.

- The veggie items on the menu may not be deep-fried, but the new General Store in the spot once occupied by the Elk Grove Brewery and Restaurant continues a tradition of friendly atmosphere and great beers on tap.

- Watch a highlight video of the Wildcats snatching victory from the miners.

- In a town of cover bands, the members of Restrayned stand out as crafters of old-school, melodic heavy metal.
