Who Is Elk Grove's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Barack Obama their person of the year. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Barack Obama as their Person of the Year.

“For finding and forging a new majority, for turning weakness into opportunity and for seeking, amid great adversity, to create a more perfect union, Barack Obama is TIME's 2012 Person of the Year,” Time managing editor Richard Stengel explained in his note to readers.

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Elk Grove's Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse?”

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

In ten years, in local high school civics and government classes, one of the questions that might be asked, “Who was Elk Grove’s first elected mayor?” History tends to remember events that influence the scale of time as we expect great things from this election. For that reason and many others, I believe the Elk Grove Person of the Year should be Gary Davis. Though on the Elk Grove City Council for six years, Gary had many collaborative firsts in 2012 including bringing forward the Best in Elk Grove Business Awards in concert with community leaders, organized the Inaugural Kaiser Permanente Running of the Elk Half Marathon which brought thousands to our community, and worked with our city’s faith-based leaders to bring a transitional home to Elk Grove to help those who need assistance in becoming self sufficient once again. There many others who should make the list, but at the top should be Elk Grove’s first elected mayor. And as the saying goes, "Remember history and math!"

Sorry, I do not believe Gary Davis should be person of the year for Elk Grove. While I support him, I'd like to wait to see what he does as mayor. Being elected the first mayor isn't enough to earn the title of EG person of the year. He did well as a city council member. Let's see how he does as mayor first. . Perhaps another year!

Great thought Irene. I would like to see someone who has helped the community or contributed in a large scale way snag this title. Whom , I have no idea but if we have a solider from EG who gave their life for our freedom , that person has my vote.
