The NINTH Annual Tomato Tasting, put on by the Elk Grove Community Garden

The NINTH Annual Tomato Tasting, put on by the Elk Grove Community Garden is
Saturday, September 7th , from 9am to 12noon.  This FREE event is open to the public.  The tasting tables will be set up at the

front of the garden, for you to try over 30 different types of tomatoes’ grown

in the EGCGarden.  This year will also
feature Fence Art by Carolyn Groth, a local Elk Grove artist.  There will also be a Children’s Craft Table
hosted by the Elk Grove Gardeners of the Grove.

Some tomatoes, herbs, plants and yard art will be available for

purchase.  There will also be Community

Garden tours and a Master Gardener will be available to answer your gardening questions.  Come out and visit this great

event to taste test some different tomato varieties, tour the garden, to see the

success of the Elk Grove Community Garden and how it gives back to the

community.

The Elk Grove Community Garden (EGCG) is a self supporting, non-profit

organization. The EGCG does accept gifts and grants that help support the

garden.  The garden is on 1.1 acres and

consists of 72 raised beds that are 4 ft. wide and 16 ft. long. The Garden also

includes ten additional double raised beds on a walkway that will accommodate

wheel chairs and walkers for those individuals who cannot access the regular

garden beds.  There is a minimal cost of $36 per growing year to rent a

plot. A growing year is March 1 to February 28.  Each member donates 12

hours a year to the overall beautification of the garden and all improvements

have been the result of volunteerism.

The EGCG provides stimulation, a safe outdoor environment, and gardening

opportunities to group homes and agencies that care for and educate children,

youth, and adults with a variety of disabilities. The EGCG herb garden was

created and planted by the Support Works for Women (a program under the direction

of Elk Grove Food Bank) and is now cared for by garden members. Some of the members

are Master Gardeners and the gardeners all share information and help teach and

learn from each other.

The EGCG provides a learning center and offers free classes to the public.  The garden offers composting classes (taught by the City of Elk Grove), rose pruning classes, tree and vine pruning classes, spring and fall vegetable gardening, drip water systems, and low water landscaping classes. The EGCG includes a variety of fruit trees that are cared for by individual gardeners and all the fruit is donated to the Elk Grove Food Bank. The garden also contains several Food Bank plots that are tended by garden plot holders.Between what is grown for the Elk Grove Food Bank and what is donated by individual gardeners, The Garden has donated thousands of pounds of fresh produce and herbs to the Elk Grove Food Bank. For the growing year 2012, the Elk Grove Community Garden donated approximately 3,200 pounds of fresh produce to the Elk Grove Food Bank.
