Gun Shop Near Bar & Bowling Alley: Do You Mind?

Does it matter where local gun shops are located?

A relatively new gun store in Elk Grove, Shootin Shack Guns, became a topic of conversation in an Elk Grove Online posting this week.

The discussion comes in the wake of last Friday's  The original poster in the forum, calcanuck, says:

"I am compelled to ask why there is a new gun shop in the same complex as Strikes Bowling, Coaches bar, and California Fitness? Who thought that was a good idea? How can we get this business moved?"

Many of the ensuing comments go on to defend the business -- some saying that there's nothing wrong with having a gun shop in that location and others pointing to the current economy, in which landlords must take any tenant they can get.

"Why would we want it moved?" asks one commenter. "As far as I know they have done nothing illegal."

Calcanuck goes on to explain that he/she would prefer a gun shop not be near a bar or family entertainment center.

"Interesting that many people piped in about a tattoo shop not be allowed in old town because of the 'clientele' it would attract," wrote calcanuck. "But guns stores no problem!"

Another Elk Grove gun store, The Gun Room, is located in a mostly industrial area in southern Elk Grove.

What do you think of the location? Problematic, or a non-issue?

I have worked with children for 25 years. The idea of having this store close to a large center that atracts teens is just asking prolems to develop. Please find another location to allow them to continue their business but as a community we must insist this combination be not allowed, Jan

So its ok to have a BAR next door to a bowling alley that attracts teens, but not a gun store where it's not even legally possible to buy a gun and walk out the same day with it? What exactly is the "danger" here? I don't understand the logic. As far as what kind of clientele the gun store attracts, I can guarantee you it'll attract classier and more responsible people than a bowling alley and a bar will and HAS attracted over the past several years.

There is no logic, but that has never stopped certain groups of "concerned community members" from squawking loudly without thinking through the issue first. It is actually humorous when one considers other combinations that are much more potentially volatile, such as beer sold in a gas station or a bong store by a high school, or Darrin's example above.

M. Legison,
You're spot on concerning this issue. Although I do think we need to take a deep look at the whole gun issue, a gun shop near a bar and a bowling alley is a NON-ISSUE.

Using their logic, the original posters should also clang their bell against WalMart. After all, the new WalMart is situated near two schools of teens, and WalMart sells ammunition, cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, junk food, and contraceptives. Oh, the horror! Save the community!

Next we are going to outlaw music, dancing, and booze. I feel another bad version of Footloose coming on!
Think Free December 19, 2012 at 04:33 pm
Quit saying outlaw. No one wants to take your guns or outlaw them.
FYI our city is soon going to ban assault weapons. Just the weapons of mass destruction and armor. I would like to add one more thing to the new law coming that all former NRA and owners of more than one weapon have a psychological test. Seems to me that is where the problem is coming from. All joking aside! I remember the days when they had those cigarette machines next to the high schools . It was always a good way to use your lunch money! As long as the gun store does not sell assault weapons or body armour. Who cares!

It really does not matter where guns are bought. The appropriate argument on gun responsibility and safety is where they are put into use. As much as i'd like to take a shot at Strikes for running a hip hop club in town, most of the weapons used by the gang banger losers that go there on weekends aren't purchased over any counter.
If we listen to the current Red State mantra, we don't have a gun problem, we just have to screen and interview every citizen in america for any kind of mental illness and lock them up.....and then they compare liberals to Soviets.... if we listen to the blue state mantra, we have to eliminate guns pretty much altogether hoping to live in some Helsinki-like utopia until someone uses explosives or blades etc... to kill multiple people, then it's due to a lack of understanding of their problem, and we need to find a way to tax and regulate it. Where we are is in a multi-generational sink hole of a lack of accountability and responsibility being taught to our kids. and things will get worse before they get better. No amount of bibles or bullets will fix it quick. This will take generations to overcome.

It's certainly far less threatening than a tattoo parlor (sarcastic font).

Jan- feel free to get a clue. If you work with children already then you are fully aware of the games that are available at every major department store and online that encourage shooting, being a pimp, beat a hoe, running over innocent pedestrians, and the list goes on. Children are already being numbed down by the violience in games, music videos, and movies. If they walk out of Strikes and see a gun shop it means nothing to them. None of your children that you work with have a chance of obtaining a gun from this gun store, NOT A CHANCE. Your logic is illogical.
Now our mayor has joined other mayors in some new legistlation. This is all polictical gobblygook . If he really believed and had a passion for this subject we would have heard from him on this before. In the Oklahama bombing fertilzer was used, is that next? How about some legistlation for some mental health programs?

Let's also ban Pac Man as it promotes eating disorders. Minecraft encourages reckless digging. Whack A Mole does nothing but train kids to abuse animals, and Tetris dehumanizes L shaped blocks!

I have serious concerns about having a bowling alley next too a gun shop!
I think the Strike's Bowling Alley is a bad influence on the gun shop! In March of 2011 a major fight broke out at Strikes and In June of 2011 there was a serious hate crime! I really don't think we should have that kind of business around a gun shop! Does this sound about as crazy as the first response to this article?

Why not down to Grantline and then head back north along the freeway? Plus Kammerer will eventuallyRead More be widened all the way to I-5 and commuters can use that too. Take Grantline to Kammerer to Bruceville.

An overpass and off/on ramps will be built at Whitelock Parkway after the mall is built, whichRead More should take place after the soccer stadium is built, which should take place after the city secures a professional soccer team. Elk Grove better make sure the professional soccer team is a women's team, or else LaWanna Montgomery will be mad.

Thanks for the suggestion. The City is currently studying a new interchange off 99 and Whitelock,Read More and the project is in our General Plan. We’re also updating the Elk Grove Blvd. onramp—currently one of the most outdated on 99 in the region. Work will begin this summer.
