A 75-year-old man died Sunday when the vehicle in which he was traveling slammed into another vehicle, which in turn hit a third, on the 99 Freeway, authorities said.
The crash on the northbound side, near Eschinger Road, was reported at 11:42 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Adrian Quintero told Patch.
According to Cosumnes fire Deputy Chief John Michelini, traffic had slowed on the highway but the vehicle carrying the senior citizen did not slow and plowed into the vehicle directly ahead.
That vehicle -- carrying four people, including a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old -- then struck another vehicle, the chief said.
The four in the middle vehicle all were taken to UC Davis Medical Center, Michelini told Patch.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash.
Traffic resumed a normal flow about 1:30 p.m., Quintero said.
