A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday night while riding in a vehicle with his father near James Rutter Middle School, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
Rutter is located in south Sacramento, but is part of the Elk Grove Unified School District.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. near the intersection of Loucreta and Palmer House drives, the sheriff's department said in a press release.

The victim’s father then drove to the hospital; unfortunately, the child did not survive."
