Northbound 99 Open Again After Big Rig Crash

One truck spilled asphalt on road.

Northbound Highway 99 is open again near Elk Grove Blvd after a crash between two big rigs closed down a portion of the highway Thursday morning, slowing traffic throughout the area.

Two people suffered moderate injuries in the crash and were taken to local hospitals for observation, said Cosumnes Fire Chief Tracey Hansen.

One of the trucks was carrying 6,000 gallons of asphalt mixed with chemicals, some of which spilled on the road, Hansen said. The California Highway Patrol was working to clean up the spill.

The asphalt emulsion "is not something you want pouring out on the ground," said Hansen. "But there's no immediate life or safety threat."
