Elk Grove High Fire Was Arson, Officials Say

The fire created about $50,000 in damage, authorities say.

The fire that destroyed football equipment and other supplies at Elk Grove High School Thursday morning was arson, officials say.

The Cosumnes Fire Department said the blaze, which was first reported around 2:45 a.m., destroyed two storage sheds and lightly damaged a third.

The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes, the Cosumnes Fire Department said in a press release.

Elk Grove Unified School District spokeswoman Liz Graswich said the fire destroyed a football practice sled, a small tractor and other supplies–a total loss of about $50,000.

The Cosumnes Fire Department acknowledged rumors are already flying around the cause of the fire, but declined to respond to them.

“I am aware of conversations taking place on various social media platforms regarding this fire and theories regarding potential suspects,” the press release quoted Deputy Fire Chief John Michelini as saying. “We are conducting our investigation and will not be responding to, or providing comment on any social media rumors related to this incident.”

Here's how to help if you have information on this fire:
