Elk Grove Police K9s Get $5K Donation

Police dogs past and present got a $5,000 gift Thursday in Elk Grove.

The AAA office on Laguna Boulevard delivered a check to the Elk Grove Police K9 Association; the money will help care for retired police dogs and provide extra training and safety equipment for active-duty dogs.

"We went to a show where we saw them do a dog demonstration that just wowed us," AAA Branch Manager Will Stallworth said.

Elk Grove Police Sgt. Ryan Elmore said the department currently has seven K9s, and there are five retired police K9s. The retired K9s live at home with handlers who take on new police dogs, he said.

"They're a huge asset for the city," Elmore said, noting police dogs can go places human officers can't, but are also great for connecting with the community at schools and other events.
