Fire Torches Football Equipment at Elk Grove High School

The fire broke out around 2:45 a.m. Thursday in Elk Grove.

A fire struck two storage units at Elk Grove High School early Thursday morning, destroying some football and other sports equipment, according to authorities.

The Cosumnes Fire Department said the fire was reported at 2:45 a.m. in two storage units near the football field. A third storage unit was threatened, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

Elk Grove Unified School District spokeswoman Liz Graswich said the shed contained some football equipment, but not all of the team's gear. A football practice sled, some fertilizer and a small tractor were also in the shed, she said.

The football team said it was seeking information about the cause of the fire.

"All sled bags, hitting bags, etc are GONE!," the team said on Facebook.

The cause of the fire and the exact amount of damage are not known at this time, the department said on Twitter.

Graswich said school officials are still assessing the damage.
