Free Catalytic Converter Etching Offered Tuesday Until 5 p.m.

Update: Elk Grove Police say 170 vehicles took advantage of the catalytic converter etching Tuesday, and future events are in the works.

Elk Grove residents concerned about catalytic converter theft can take a free preventative measure Tuesday: Elk Grove Police and a local Jiffy Lube will etch license plate numbers on converters for free.

Here's what the police department says about the event:

The Elk Grove Police Department is partnering with Jiffy Lube to host a FREE catalytic converter etching event.  The event will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Jiffy Lube (9611 Auto Center Drive in Elk Grove).

During the "Etch and Catch" event, your vehicle's license plate number will be etched onto your catalytic converter(s).  The etching may deter thieves from stealing your converter.  The presence of license plate numbers on catalytic converters can also provide law enforcement with the information needed to identify stolen property, contact victims, and apprehend criminals.  This free "Etch and Catch"  event is open to residents of all cities.
