Teen Arrested in Father's Death

Police believe Darrell Dewitt, 19, used an axe to murder his father inside an apartment on Emerald Park Drive Tuesday night.

Elk Grove police have arrested a 19-year-old man they believe killed his father with an axe in an Emerald Park Drive apartment Tuesday night.

Police found Darrell Dewitt, 19, suffering from stab wounds to the upper torso in an apartment in the Emerald Garden complex at 9521 Emerald Park Drive, according to police reports. In a back bedroom, police discovered his 44-year-old father, who goes by the same name, stabbed to death.

Officers, who were responding to a request to check on the elder DeWitt, also detained for questioning and later relased two other men who were found at the scene.

Dewitt was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police say they now believe he killed his father and inflicted stab wounds on himself. They plan to take him to the Sacramento County Main Jail and book him for homicide as soon as his condition allows.

Department spokesperson Christopher Trim said officers still don't know why the younger Dewitt might have killed his father and that the investigation is ongoing.
