Police Say Man Beat Pregnant Ex in Stomach with Baseball Bat
John Collins, 27, is being held on felony charges including attempted murder.
A Rancho Cordova man was arrested in Elk Grove Saturday afternoon after he allegedly smashed windows out of his pregnant ex-girlfriend's car while she was inside it, then hit her in the stomach with a baseball bat.
John Collins, 27, is currently being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail on felony charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, child endangerment and making threats.
Elk Grove police say Collins went to the home of his ex-girlfriend to exchange custody of a child they have in common. The pair began arguing, and Collins broke out some of the windows to the victim's car while she was inside it, according to a crime log.

She fled in the car and called 911, but Collins followed her to the parking lot of an unidentified business, according to the crime log.
"[Collins] then armed himself with a baseball bat and struck [the victim] in the stomach," the crime log states. "[The victim] is seven months pregnant. Several witnesses intervened and tried to get [Collins] to put down the baseball bat. Officers arrived and took [Collins] into custody. [The victim] was transported to a local area hospital."

Police later found Collins had sent threatening text messages to the victim, according to the crime log.
After reviewing the report from the incident, Elk Grove Police Department spokesman Officer Chris Trim said he didn't have an update on the woman's condition, but said "it appears that the victim and her unborn child were not injured."
Collins is due in court Tuesday afternoon, and is ineligible for bail.
