Prescription Drug Disposal Site Available at Elk Grove Police Department

People can drop off unused and unwanted prescription drugs on April 30.

Elk Grovians can rid their houses of unwanted, unused, expired and potentially dangerous prescription drugs by dropping them off at the Elk Grove Police Department.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30, people can anonymously drop off their medications for disposal at the police department located at 8380 Laguna Palms Way.

Started in September last year, this is part of a federal DUI program administered by the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement partners. The program aims to prevent pill abuse and theft, and to provide a safer and less hazardous way of disposing unused medicines, according to a press release from the Elk Grove Police Department.

This is the first time Elk Grove is participating in the program. Elk Grove police will bring the dropped-off drugs to the Drug Enforcement Administration for disposal, spokesman Christopher Trim said.

Last September, 242,000 pounds of prescriptions drugs were collected at more than 4,000 sites, the press release states.
