Toddler Who Fell in Pool Last Week Has Died

19-month-old Zoey Hammond died Wednesday night.

Zoey Hammond, , has died, according to postings online and the Sacramento County Coronor's Office.

According to family friends and an online journal, Zoey went into a coma after the accident and then made improvement, but died Wednesday night.

"There have been so many prayers for Zoey, asking for a miracle," a post on the family's online journal read. "Today we realized that the real miracle is that Zoey stayed with us 9 more days after that horrible accident so that we could all say good-bye."

According to the Cosumnes Fire Department and Elk Grove Police Department, Zoey was at a relative's home on Cooperston Way on June 4 when she wandered through an open door and then fell into a backyard pool.

The family's online journal said Zoey suffered brain damage from the incident.

Friends had been hoping to organize a fundraiser to help the girl's family pay for medical bills.

Amy Hagen, who went to high school with Zoey's mother, said she was amazed by the support the toddler's family had received in the past week.

"It's brought back my faith in humanity just to see the outpouring of love this family is getting," Hagen said by phone Wednesday.
