Two Armed Robberies in Elk Grove Thursday Evening

Sprouts Farmers Market on Laguna Boulevard was robbed Thursday evening; a few hours later, a 12-year-old was robbed.

An Elk Grove grocery store and a 12-year-old boy were robbed within hours of each other Thursday.

In the first incident, police say a man walked into the Sprouts Farmers Market, 8211 Laguna Blvd., around 6:40 p.m. and brandished a handgun.

The man demanded cash from an employee standing near a register, then leaned over and took it himself, the Elk Grove Police Department said in a crime log.

He fled the store on foot and was last seen running east through the parking lot. The suspect was described as a "black male adult, 30s, 5-foot-8, 190 lbs., wearing a white baseball cap, white t-shirt, dark colored jeans and dark colored tennis shoes."

Teen arrested after allegedly robbing younger boy at gunpoint

About three hours later, police say a 12-year-old boy and several of his friends were playing in a field near Quarter Ranch Ct. and Rhone River Dr., in southern Elk Grove.

A teen who had been standing nearby approached the younger kids and pulled a .22-caliber rifle from his pants, according to the police crime log. He stole the 12-year-old boy's cellphone and ran into a nearby neighborhood, police say.

Elk Grove Police were able to determine the suspect's identity, and learned he was on probation and lived nearby, according to the crime log. Police paid him a visit.

"A probation search of [the suspect's] room led to the discovery of the .22-caliber rifle used in the robbery along with the clothing that [the suspect] was wearing during the commission of the crime," the police crime log states. "[The suspect] was identified as the person responsible for the robbery. [The victim's] cellphone was located in a field near the robbery scene."

The suspect, a 15-year-old Elk Grove resident, was arrested and taken to juvenile hall.
