City Approves Funds for Homeless Housing

Nearly $240,000 in grant money will go towards transitional housing facility.

City council members Wednesday officially approved setting aside nearly $240,000 in unused federal grant money to create a transitional housing facility for the homeless in Elk Grove.

The aid for Elk Grove's growing homeless population had already gotten a tentative go-ahead at .

There's no word yet on where the home would be located. City leaders plan to buy and renovate an existing single-family house or duplex somewhere in the city.

They'll first solicit proposals from non-profit organizations who want to run the facility. Sacramento Self-Help Housing, which manages several similar houses in the area, has already expressed interest.

A final plan is scheduled to be approved at the council's December 14 meeting.
