City Could Give Out More Grant Money Than Planned

The city of Elk Grove received more federal grant money than anticipated.

Local nonprofits and community projects could get more money than planned this year from the city of Elk Grove.

Each year, the city gives out federal Community Development Block Grant funding, and this year had to dole it out before it knew the exact amount. City staff guessed low and found more money to give away, and Wednesday night the Elk Grove City Council will decide how to distribute an extra $246,000.

The city is only allowed to give 15 percent of that money to "public services," and has already pledged money to the Elk Grove Food Bank, Sacramento Self-Help Housing, Courageous Connection and South County Services. The rest of the money would go toward capital projects, like improving curb ramp accessibility, a minor home repair program, and the city's transitional house program.

All of those programs would receive more money under a proposal from city staff, who are also proposing to create a $50,000 small business loan program, which would loan money "to small businesses creating new jobs for lower-income persons."

The exact breakdown of funding can be seen here in the city staff report for Wednesday's city council meeting.
