City Will Increase Funding for Nonprofits, Local Projects

The city of Elk Grove will increase its Community Development Block Grant funding.

Elk Grove nonprofits and projects like curb ramps and the city's transitional housing program will get thousands more dollars than planned.

City staff expected to have less federal community grant funding available, but ended up with more cash than planned; staff also scrounged up money that hadn't been used or was stuck in slow-moving projects.

At Wednesday's Elk Grove City Council meeting, a plan was approved to distribute the extra $246,000.

"It's nice that you found another pot of gold," Vice Mayor Steve Detrick said.

Nonprofits that will benefit include the Elk Grove Food Bank, Sacramento Self-Help Housing, Courageous Connection and South County Services.

The city will also create a $50,000 small business loan program, which will loan money "to small businesses creating new jobs for lower-income persons."

The exact breakdown of funding can be seen here in the city staff report for Wednesday's city council meeting.
