Council to Discuss Multicultural Committee

New group would plan festival, reach out to communities.

Elk Grove City Council members will consider at whether to form a multicultural committee that would plan a festival and advise the council on outreach to ethnic groups within the city.

The festival would take place in 2012, according to the proposal before the council. Each council member would appoint two members to the committee.

The proposal comes after the city in August. Data from the 2010 U.S. Census show that Elk Grove is , with a population that is 46 percent white, 26 percent Asian, 18 percent Latino and 11 percent black. Native Americans and Pacific Islanders each made up about 1 percent of residents, and 8 percent identified as being of two or more races.

A city staff report on the proposal says it would require about 10 hours of staff time per month, with no other foreseeable costs to the city.
