Elk Grove is Officially a Teenager

The city turns 13 years old Monday.

Elk Grove turned 13 years old Monday, the anniversary of its incorporation as a city in the year 2000.

Prior to that, the area was an unincorporated Sacramento County community. Supporters of cityhood tried three earlier ballot measures to incorporate, but weren't successful until March 7, 2000, when Measure J was passed.

The city was formed shortly after, and officially incorporated on July 1. Of the original city council members, only one–Jim Cooper–still sits on the council today.

Those who pushed for cityhood wanted more local control and more cops, leading to the formation of the Elk Grove Police Department in 2005.

Read more about the efforts leading up to cityhood in a series of articles I wrote in 2010 for the Elk Grove Citizen.
