Flash Poll: Ryan Pick Solidifies Ticket Differences, CA Democrats and Republicans Say

In a Patch survey, Republican activists lauded Paul Ryan for his fiscal conservatism and brainpower, while Democrats said the choice could help the Obama campaign.

California Democratic insiders are crowing about Mitt Romney’s choice of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, saying the pick helps the Obama campaign, according to a Patch snap poll conducted over the weekend.

Republicans, meanwhile, said adding Ryan to the ticket could refocus the presidential campaign on economic issues and sway undecided voters—though not enough to turn the tide in true-blue California, some said.

Patch sent survey questions to 79 Republican and 63 Democratic party activists and elected officials within 48 hours of Romney’s announcement. Twenty-one Democrats and 21 Republicans responded.

More than three-quarters of Democratic respondents said Romney’s choice of Ryan—the chairman of the House Budget Committee and a strong advocate for cutting taxes and domestic spending—would galvanize California Democrats.

The pick “cements the image of Romney as ideologically committed to dismantling public support for middle class needs (education, health, broad based employment),” one Democrat wrote.

Eighty-one percent of Democrats strongly or somewhat agreed that Ryan’s presence on the GOP ticket would help Obama win senior citizens’ votes in California, while 90 percent agreed with the statement: "Now that Ryan is on the ticket, Democrats can win by running against Ryan's existing budget plans and particularly his proposal for Medicare."

Republicans: Choice Will Energize GOP Base

Republicans who responded to the unscientific survey cited Ryan’s fiscal conservatism and ability to appeal to the GOP base as strong selling points.

The pick “shows Romney is serious about addressing fiscal and economic issues,” one Republican wrote.

“It provides a theme for the Romney campaign that didn't exist before,” added another. “It also hopefully moves the dialogue away from Romney's personal finances and experiences at Bain Capital.”

Forty-eight percent of Republicans agreed that Ryan could help win over California’s undecided voters, while 43% disagreed and 10% were neutral.

“It will definitely energize the GOP base, but him on the ticket doesn't suddenly put California in play,” one insider commented. California hasn't gone for a Republican presidential candidate since favoring George Bush over Michael Dukakis in 1988

Regardless of California’s fate, more than three-quarters of Republicans disagreed that the Democrats could win nationally by attacking Ryan’s budget plans, while only 10% agreed. And some even expressed hope that Californians could learn from the VP pick’s tough talk on budgeting.

“The pick of Ryan will help educate voters in California about the importance of limited government and how we cannot spend our way into prosperity,” wrote one Republican.

Insiders from both parties characterized Ryan as smart and charismatic.

“Whether or not someone agrees with his politics, the Paul Ryan VP candidacy provides a worthy adversary to the Obama-Biden campaign and a clear distinction between the two tickets,” one Democrat wrote.

Patch’s Red and Blue California Surveys

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in California. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this weekend's questions.

Patch will be conducting Red California and Blue California surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in California. What do you think about Mitt Romney's choice of a running mate? Tell us in the comments.

M.Legison August 13, 2012 at 12:15 pm
The president and challenger are now diametrically opposed with the addition of Paul Ryan. The line in the sand has been drawn. There is no good reason to be undecided now. Romney's running mate choice will not affect the California top line vote. It's a blue state, and the allure of something for nothing has long since passed any delta point for the voting majority.
Again the Patch has practiced good disclosure with the internals of the survey. Thanks for trying to keep it real and interesting.

Looking at Paul Ryans popularity in the polls, it looks like an easy win for Obama.
He has had the furthest leed in the average of ALLL of the polls since Romney has entered the race and in the last two days has doubled that lead. The independents will remember Paul Ryans Medicare plan, how the Republicans stopped the budget from passing, lowering our credit rating and basically doing nothing to help the people of our country (except the rich). In the long run this is only going to make it easier for Obama. Thank you for not remembering that people think differently than you! Obama 2012.
M.Legison August 13, 2012 at 05:24 pm
It's not an easy win for either candidate. Ryan is actually well liked on both sides, including in his D+ district. That does not mean everyone agrees with him.
RCP average shows Obama up by 4 pts, and that is DOWN .6 from Friday. In most polls that lead is within the MOE so it is either a statistical tie or a micro lead for Obama. I don't pay much attention to bounces after an announcement or immediately after a non-incumbent convention as they are bound to get some points afterwards. Two weeks after is when it starts to count. There has been no meaningful change in national polling for weeks, except Obama was up more in the last couple of weeks. National polls are not very important anyway. The swing state polls are what count.
Think Free August 13, 2012 at 08:08 pm
actually his average the last two weeks was 2 to 2.5 then it doubled and went up to 4.5. When did you look. I just looked again and it is 4.0 which is double his best average.
Watch, this pick is only going to hurt Romney.
M.Legison August 13, 2012 at 10:16 pm
Todd--here is how I look at the polls, FWIW to you. First, know that RCP weights for timliness only, not accuracy. I of course look at the moving average, but only concentrate on four polls. I look at Survey USA, Gallup, Rasmussen, and Public Policy Polling. I like LV over RV but that's not the only discriminate factor. SurveyUSA does large samples and is historically accurate. Gallup is up there too. Rasmussen in always LV but polls electronically and tends to lean slightly Rep. PPP is the only political pollster (Democrat) but I really like their methodology. I throw out Fox News, CBS, and CNN as they almost always oversample Democrats and lean left. I, as should you, completely disregard Zogby. They are very unreliable and tend to come up with major outliers. Awhile ago they had Romney up by 13. No one else was ever close to that. So, I tend to watch trend lines from those four, just like you might watch a stock chart.
Always look at the MOE. It will usually range from 3-4%. Today the race is statistically tied as the Obama lead is within the average MOE, plus or minus 1. Democrats are oversampled because there are more of you, but Republicans always vote in greater percentages so factor that in too. As said previously, the battleground state polls are much more important but the data is rarely current. Hopes this helps.
M.Legison August 13, 2012 at 10:28 pm
Error--CNN/WSJ is good. ABC is a throw out for me. Watch for a bump for Romney this week. Nearly always happens with VP pick, doesn't mean much. Same after the conventions. About Sept 15 is when the polls take shape, then Intrade on Oct 1.

Liberals in California will always vote for a Democrat President. Like it really matters to CA libs who the GOP VP pick was going to be! The last time a GOP candidate was chosen in CA was about 25 years ago with GHWB.
They can talk all they want about how they think he will actually help Obama's campaign. What CA libs think means squat across the country (where the Presidential decision will actually be made).
Racerx Gto August 14, 2012 at 02:47 am
But it sure is fun reading them getting their panties into a bunch. Their hot button is wide open. I'd exploit it, but probably get kicked off the Patch. The libbies, the group of tolerance and understanding sure hate conservatives with a passion, complete with effigies, the whole nine years. I've never seen this much hell raised over a VP pick. Ryan must terrify them. When Joe Biden was nominated, nothing was said.

"When ignorance is bliss, t'is folly to be wise!" Your ostrich view of the world is amazing considering that your eyes must be full of sand.
Think Free August 15, 2012 at 12:53 pm
It is all good. Just let the Repubnothings keep thinking they rule the universe.
Then see what happens in November. Gary Davis for Mayor Ami Bera for Congress And someone who is beginning to kick buttocks and take names. Obama 2012. Please Repubnothings, just keep thinking that you are the only people in the world!
David August 16, 2012 at 03:12 am
The Lawyers for Ron Paul have a law suite in federal court that would hopfully unbind all the delagates and leave Romney with 0 opening the playing field up to several options. By law this case will have to be heard and will be decided prior to the RNC lets all pray that we as americans have a voice that can be listened to cause the Left and Right candidates will not cut it this election.
Spam_For_Me August 16, 2012 at 04:35 pm
@Racerx Gto I like the way you think and write.
It really sucks to be from California. California is DESPISED across our own nation, largely due to our politics and is considered a "gimme" in national politics. I don't feel represented by my "representatives". Talk about taxation without representation. The left in this state has made this state irrelevant on a national level. If your vote never changes, you have no leverage for change. Why should any President even consider what California thinks (left or right). IMHO, Democratic Presidents and candidates only pay California lip service, because she's already on her back.

I would like to know why Romney has been commiting felonys by doing fund raisers in EUROPE and why know one is talking about that.
Bwood August 18, 2012 at 02:15 am
I'd like to know the answer to this as well, and why nobody's talking about it. Good catch, David.

Also I would like to know why the lawyers for Ron Paul case in federal court has not ben discussed by any news media this case has been ruled on and unbinds the delegates in all 50 states going into the RNC next week, Romney will have 0 delegates going in the people will be able to vote there will.
David August 21, 2012 at 04:57 pm
This is anouther reason not to vote for Romney or Obama.

well David here is a lesson were Dems came from, learn true history
Quite frankly, this may be the best video that I have ever seen on YouTube. You can't successfully argue against historic facts. Unbelievably well done. Make sure you watch to the end. It was cool to see the creator. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UObEdF_uhaw
