It's Official: Ami Bera is Sworn in as Congressman

Elk Grove doctor is sworn in as a congressman representing Sacramento County.

Dr. Ami Bera is now Rep. Ami Bera (D-Elk Grove).

The Elk Grove physician was sworn in Thursday in Washington, D.C., as the newest representative for California's newly redrawn 7th Congressional District, serving Elk Grove, Rosemont, Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Citrus Heights and other areas.

It took him two tries to defeat incumbent Dan Lungren, a Republican: in 2010 and in 2012.

Bera is currently the only Indian American in Congress, according to a press release.

His office issued the following statement:

“I am incredibly honored humbled that the people of Sacramento County have placed their trust in me to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives. Now begins the hard work of addressing the many challenges facing our region and our country. I look forward to working with my new colleagues from both parties to find common ground and to rebuild an economy that works for the middle class.

"My parents emigrated here from India in the 1950s with very little but the dream of a better life. I grew up believing America was a land of opportunity, where if you worked hard and played by the rules, you could reach your full potential. Thursday, my father was among those watching as I was sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives. My family’s story isn’t unique; it’s the story of the American Dream. I will work every day to ensure that we continue to invest in the next generation and keep the American Dream alive.”

Bera was also recently named to the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Science, Space and Technology.

“I am honored to have been named to the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” he said. “In an increasingly complex global landscape, relationships with other nations have tangible effects here at home and we need strategic thinking to guide our foreign policy in the 21st century. Additionally, the Sacramento region is uniquely situated to benefit from opening up new markets for our goods and services around the world. That would help create jobs here at home. Through my new role on the Science, Space and Technology, I’ll also work to foster innovative industries that can bring good jobs to the 7th district.”

Oh boy! This is such a great opportunity for the freshman Obama water carrier to get great deals on mortgages for his real estate empire, now that he no longer practices medicine.

I can't find an Email address so here is what I have to say. First, on gun control go for the low hanging fruit, namely outlawing semi-automatic and automatic guns and clips. Personally I've in favor of more stringent measures including a HUGE licensing fee for gun shows, but let's just start somewhere. Second, please don't go all squishy liberal and think that dear ol uncle sam can solve everything with more money and regulations and that whoever believes differently is just a stupid redneck repug. Thank you and congratulations on your victory.
