Poll Results: What Should Be Done to Create Jobs in Elk Grove

An easy question to ask, perhaps not so easy to answer

Job creation is city leaders' top priority, Elk Grove Mayor Steven Detrick told the audience earlier this year in his .

With the city budget for the next fiscal year setting aside over $600,000 for economic development, the stakes are high in the search for the right tonic for Elk Grove's ailing job market.

So we were eager to hear what readers would come up with when what should be done to create jobs in Elk Grove.

Twenty-seven percent of you were pessimistic, saying there's nothing to be done here locally; we're at the mercy of larger economic forces. Another 27 percent chose the ever-popular route of giving businesses tax breaks and reducing regulation.

Some readers were ready to go with less-tested ideas: 18 percent thought we should convince state agencies to locate their offices here. And nine percent each voted for requiring companies to hire local residents, funding a city-run jobs program with taxes on the wealthy, and running a PR campaign touting the benefits of doing business in Elk Grove.
