RT Breaks Ground on Light Rail Expansion to Cosumnes River College

The Blue Line expansion is expected to be completed by September 2015.

Elk Grove is one step closer to being connected to Sacramento's network of light rail trains.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District broke ground Tuesday on a 4.3-mile expansion of the light rail's Blue Line. It's expected to connect south Sacramento stations to Cosumnes River College by September 2015.

The $270 million expansion–half of which is paid for with federal funding–will add light rail stations at Morrison Creek, Franklin, Center Parkway and Cosumnes River College, Patch reported previously.

The Sacramento Bee says a dispute over pension rules could put some of the funding for the project in jeopardy. The U.S. Department of Labor could freeze some of the project's funding because "California's new pension law likely violates a federal mass transit grant rule that requires transportation agencies to preserve their employees' collective bargaining rights," that department reportedly told the Bee.
