"In this weak field, six-year councilman Davis is the best choice," the Bee's editorial board wrote Saturday.

It said Council Member Sophia Scherman and nurse Lynn Wheat also stand out from the field in the mayor's race.

The Bee praised Davis for his part in the deal to relocate California's prison healthcare offices to Elk Grove, and for helping to resolve a lawsuit between the city and the Cosumnes Community Services District when he was first elected in 2006. But the Bee also calls Davis "too close to land speculators" and criticizes him for supporting the city's Sphere of Influence expansion plan, although it points out he now backs a much smaller expansion.
