Sac Bee Endorses Gary Davis for Mayor, Calls Choices 'Weak'

The Sacramento Bee has at the same time complimented and dealt an insult to Elk Grove City Council Member Gary Davis.

The newspaper has endorsed Davis for mayor, but also said he and the other five candidates make up a "so-so lineup."

"In this weak field, six-year councilman Davis is the best choice," the Bee's editorial board wrote Saturday.

It said Council Member Sophia Scherman and nurse Lynn Wheat also stand out from the field in the mayor's race.

The Bee praised Davis for his part in the deal to relocate California's prison healthcare offices to Elk Grove, and for helping to resolve a lawsuit between the city and the Cosumnes Community Services District when he was first elected in 2006. But the Bee also calls Davis "too close to land speculators" and criticizes him for supporting the city's Sphere of Influence expansion plan, although it points out he now backs a much smaller expansion.

Davis says he's since pushed to pull back the city's growth line from encroaching onto the Cosumnes River floodplain and that he is now working with the Sacramento Area Council of Governments to shrink it even further. This is the rest of what the Bee said about Davis and the SOI. If you are going to report a quote, then you must report the entire context. Otherwise, you end up making news rather than reporting news and that is a slippery slope!

That's a good point, Sarah. I've added some extra context to the story. Thanks!

Well, I know that at least Davis is so-so. That cheesy deal regarding moving California's prison health care offices is the tip of the proverbial iceberg. http://elkgrove.patch.com/articles/lease-signed-for-prison-health-agency-move-to-elk-grove By the way, has anyone noticed that the Bee online has begun to charge for what once was free? These are the same people whose subscription I cancelled when they couldn't even get a newspaper to my address once a week.

Given the weakness of the current field of candidates, the fact that Elk Grove has survived without a mayor until the present, there ought to be a "none of the above" choice on the ballot. I suspect the majority of voters would select this option. Of course this option will never be available. Politicians would never create an option whereby the voters could indicate that none of those running for office were desired by the electorate.
