Should the City Promote Sports and Fitness with an App, Marketing?

Local officials this week will discuss whether city funds should be spent promoting sports and fitness in Elk Grove.

The Elk Grove City Council on Wednesday will discuss a marketing program that could include a website and mobile app for residents to track time spent and distance covered exercising, a health and wellness fair, a community calendar for sporting events and more.

"The fitness and sports marketing program would support the City Council established goal of promoting Elk Grove as a recreational and cultural center that attracts visitors, and would promote facilities, activities, amenities, and natural resources that position the City as a destination," a staff report for Wednesday's meeting states.

City officials estimate the program could cost up to $15,000. The idea was first proposed by Vice Mayor Steve Detrick in 2012, according to the staff report.
