Sophia Scherman Will Run for Mayor

City council member will seek directly elected mayor's seat.

Sophia Scherman, the Elk Grove City Council member who , will run for Elk Grove Mayor, she announced in a press release Thursday.

“It’s obvious that Elk Grove needs leadership that won’t take orders from Sacramento and will focus on creating jobs and a vibrant economy,” Scherman was quoted as saying. “I have the background and experience to help move our city forward and do what is right for the people of Elk Grove. I have spent my life here and been committed to my community from day one. There are too many critical issues facing us where I know I can make a positive difference.”

The press release called Scherman the "immediate frontrunner." Other candidates include fellow City Council Member Gary Davis and businessmen Jerry Braxmeyer and .

Scherman has served as Elk Grove's mayor twice under the current rotating system, where the seat rotates each year. This November, voters will directly elect Elk Grove's mayor for the first time.

Scherman has not yet responded to requests for comment from Elk Grove Patch.
